About Ennerdale Valley SSSI

Ennerdale Valley SSSI is located in the western Lake District of Cumbria, England, encompassing a diverse range of upland habitats including ancient woodlands, blanket bogs, heathlands, and freshwater ecosystems. The valley is centered on Ennerdale Water, a scenic glacial lake surrounded by rugged fells and dense woodland. The area is notable for its ecological richness, providing habitats for rare species such as the black grouse and exceptional populations of bryophytes and lichens. The valley is one of the largest and least developed in the Lake District, contributing to its wild character and conservation value. It is historically associated with traditional farming and forestry practices, though recent conservation efforts have focused on restoring natural processes by reducing human interventions such as commercial forestry. Visitors to Ennerdale Valley SSSI can experience a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking on remote trails, birdwatching, and fishing along the lake. Iconic landmarks include the surrounding fells like Green Gable and Great Gable, ancient woodland areas, and the undisturbed watercourse habitats of the River Liza. The valley is managed in part as an experimental natural reserve, integrating conservation with public access. Its appeal lies in the combination of scenic beauty, ecological importance, and opportunities for solitude away from crowded tourist spots. Ennerdale’s remote terrain and limited facilities encourage visitors to adopt a Leave No Trace ethic to protect this sensitive environment.
